Gut Bugs and Oestrogen Metabolism: What’s the Connection?

As we continue to uncover the complexities of the human microbiome, one of the most fascinating areas of research is how gut health impacts other body functions, including hormone metabolism. Specifically, how does the gut microbiome influence oestrogen levels?

Understanding the Gut Microbiome

The gut microbiome is made up of various bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms that live in the gut (and other areas like the vaginal tract and breast tissue). These bugs play a pivotal role in many bodily processes – ranging from digestion to immune function, mood regulation, and hormone balance.

Although gut bacteria vary across individuals, the types and amounts of these microbes can influence how well your body digests, metabolises, and processes substances – oestrogen being a key example.

How the Gut Affects Oestrogen

Some gut bacteria are responsible for metabolising oestrogen. These bacteria, collectively known as the estrobolome, can significantly influence oestrogen levels in the body.

Oestrogen exists in two primary forms: oestrone (E1) and oestradiol (E2). After these hormones are metabolised in the liver, they form metabolites that are excreted through bile, urine, or faeces. In the gut, certain bacteria break down these metabolites, releasing free oestrogen that can then be reabsorbed into the bloodstream.

As a result, the composition of your gut microbiome can directly impact the balance of oestrogen in your system, which is why gut health is so crucial for hormone regulation.

Oestrogen Imbalance: Symptoms to Watch For

An imbalance in oestrogen can cause a range of symptoms such as:

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Bloating and digestive discomfort
  • Mood swings and irritability
  • Low libido
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances
  • PMS and urinary tract infections

If you’re experiencing any of these, it could be a sign that your gut health is influencing your hormone levels.

The Takeaway

Along with addressing factors like diet, liver health, and thyroid function, optimising gut health is a critical step in balancing your hormones. A balanced microbiome helps manage oestrogen metabolism, ultimately alleviating symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances.
