Endocrine disrupting chemicals are synthetic (human-made) or naturally occurring substances that interfere with your endocrine system’s ability to function properly.
They do this by:
- Mimicking hormones – EDCs can bind to hormone receptors and trigger responses like real hormones would
- Blocking hormones – They can prevent your body’s natural hormones from binding to receptors where they need to work
- Altering hormone production – They can change how much hormone your body makes or how it’s metabolised
- Interfering with hormone transport – They can affect how hormones move through your bloodstream
The result? A disrupted endocrine system that struggles to regulate reproduction, metabolism, immune function, and stress response.
And crucially – these chemicals can have effects at incredibly low doses. You don’t need to be exposed to large amounts for EDCs to cause problems.
How EDCs Impact Fertility
The connection between EDCs and reduced fertility is well-established in the research. Here’s why they’re so problematic specifically for conception:
EDCs Disrupt Ovulation and the Menstrual Cycle
Many EDCs act as oestrogen mimics (called xenoestrogens). They bind to oestrogen receptors and trigger responses in your body that real oestrogen would trigger – but without the regulation and timing that your natural hormones have.
This can lead to:
- Irregular or absent periods
- Anovulation (lack of ovulation)
- Short luteal phases

EDCs Affect Implantation and Early Pregnancy
Even if fertilisation occurs, EDC exposure can affect the uterine environment and make implantation more difficult. Some EDCs alter the expression of genes needed for successful implantation, while others increase inflammation in the uterus – creating a less hospitable environment for a growing embryo.
EDCs Increase Inflammation and Oxidative Stress
Many EDCs trigger inflammatory and oxidative stress responses in your body. This creates a systemic state of inflammation that is directly harmful to fertility – it damages eggs, impairs sperm function, increases miscarriage risk, and makes the reproductive environment less conducive to conception.

Where Are You Being Exposed to EDCs?
EDCs are unfortunately ubiquitous in modern life. You’re likely being exposed to them from multiple sources every single day. Here are the main culprits:
Food and Food Packaging
- BPA (Bisphenol A) – Found in plastic food containers, can linings, and thermal receipts. It leaches into food, especially hot foods and fatty foods
- Phthalates – Used in plastic packaging, food processing equipment, and some food additives
- Pesticides and herbicides – Non-organic produce, especially conventionally grown strawberries, spinach, apples, and grapes (the “Dirty Dozen”)
- Heavy metals – Present in soil, water, and absorbed by crops; found in high levels in certain fish (like shark and swordfish), rice, and rice-based products
Personal Care Products
- Parabens – Preservatives in lotions, shampoos, conditioners, makeup, and deodorants
- Phthalates – Hidden in “fragrance” on ingredient lists; found in perfumes, colognes, scented body products
- Triclosan – An antimicrobial agent in some soaps, toothpastes, and deodorants
- BPA and BPS – Found in some dental sealants and receipts
Household Products
- PFOA/PFOS (Forever chemicals) – Non-stick coatings on cookware, stain repellents on carpets and furniture, food packaging
- Flame retardants – Added to furniture, mattresses, and textiles
- Formaldehyde – Found in some fabrics, paints, and adhesives
- VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) – Emitted from paints, varnishes, cleaning products, and air fresheners
Tap Water
- Chlorine and chlorine byproducts – Added during water treatment
- Pesticide residues – Leaching from agricultural runoff
- Pharmaceuticals – From medications excreted by people and not fully filtered by water treatment plants
- Heavy metals – Especially lead from old pipes
Workplace Exposure
Depending on your occupation, you may be exposed to EDCs through chemicals, plastics, thermal papers, pesticides, or solvents.
The First Step: Awareness
The most important thing to understand is this: you cannot avoid all EDC exposure. It’s not realistic, and stressing about it actually undermines your fertility (remember, stress impacts hormones too!).
The goal is not perfection. The goal is reducing your overall toxic load.
Think of your body as having a “cup” of toxins. Once that cup overflows, you’re more likely to experience fertility issues. By reducing exposure in key areas – especially where it’s easy to make changes – you can keep your cup from overflowing.
The first step is simply becoming aware of where the major sources of EDC exposure are in your life.
Practical Steps to Reduce EDC Exposure
Here are actionable strategies you can implement without needing to overhaul your entire life:
1. Upgrade Your Water
Even a basic water filter can remove chlorine, some pesticide residues, and sediment. Look for:
- Pitcher filters (like Brita or ZeroWater) – Affordable entry point
- Faucet-mounted filters – Easy to install and use
- Reverse osmosis systems – More comprehensive, removes more contaminants
- Whole-home filters – If budget allows
If you’re pregnant or trying to conceive, filtering your water is one of the highest-ROI changes you can make.
2. Choose Organic Where It Matters Most
You don’t need to buy everything organic (it can get expensive!). Focus on the “Dirty Dozen” – the 12 conventionally grown produce items with the highest pesticide residues:
Strawberries, spinach, kale, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, potatoes, and capsicum!
Buying these organic significantly reduces your pesticide exposure.
3. Ditch Plastic Food Storage
Replace plastic containers with:
- Glass storage containers with stainless steel or glass lids
- Stainless steel food containers
- Beeswax wraps (instead of cling wrap)
This is especially important for storing hot foods or fatty foods, which cause more BPA leaching from plastics.
4. Switch Your Personal Care Products
This is where the YUKA app comes in incredibly handy.
YUKA is a free app that lets you scan food and cosmetic product barcodes. It instantly tells you:
- A safety score for the product (out of 100)
- Which ingredients are problematic and why
- Recommended cleaner alternatives
You can gradually replace your products as they run out – starting with the ones you use most frequently or those with the lowest YUKA scores.
Key products to prioritise:
- Deodorant (applied daily, close to lymph nodes)
- Skincare (absorbed through your skin)
- Hair care (regular exposure)
- Makeup (especially foundation and lip products)
5. Use Cast Iron or Stainless Steel Cookware
Non-stick cookware releases PFOA/PFOS when heated. Switch to:
- Cast iron (naturally non-stick once seasoned, and can provide supplemental iron)
- Stainless steel (durable and safe)
- Glass baking dishes (for oven use)
6. Choose Fragrance-Free or Naturally Scented Products
“Fragrance” on an ingredient list is a catch-all that can hide phthalates and other EDCs. Instead, look for:
- Products scented with essential oils
- Fragrance-free options
- Natural alternatives like beeswax candles instead of synthetic scented candles
7. Filter Your Shower Water
You absorb chemicals through your skin while showering. A simple shower filter removes chlorine and some other contaminants. It’s inexpensive and easy to install.
8. Reduce Receipts
Thermal receipts (from stores, petrol stations, ATMs) contain BPA. Ask for digital receipts when possible, and if you do get paper receipts, handle them minimally and wash your hands afterward.
9. Buy Organic Dairy and Meat When Possible
Pesticides accumulate in fatty tissues. Dairy and meat from conventionally raised animals can contain higher pesticide residues. If budget is a concern, prioritise organic dairy over conventional.
10. Avoid Plastic Microwaving
Never microwave food in plastic. If you need to reheat food, use:
- Glass containers with lids
- Ceramic dishes
- Stainless steel containers
- Or transfer to a plate and cover with a plate or bowl
What About the Overwhelm?
Here’s what I want you to know: you don’t need to do all of this at once.
Pick 2-3 changes that feel manageable and start there. Once those become habits, add more.
A realistic, sustainable approach is infinitely better than trying to do everything perfectly and burning out.
