What is naturopathy?

The naturopathic system of medicine integrates both traditional wisdom and scientific
evidence to promote a healing environment within the body to address specific acute and chronic health concerns and sustained maintenance of good health.

The fundamental principles that form the basis of naturopathic medicine are:

  • The healing power of nature
  • First do no harm
  • Finding and treating the cause, not just the symptoms
  • Treating the whole person
  • Education and prevention

Applying these principles involves a thorough assessment of each individual person to determine what is happening in their body, why it is happening and what internal and external factors have or continue to contribute to an individuals’ current state of health.

This involves utilisation of a range of tools including a comprehensive assessment and analysis of health history and current health, dietary and nutritional status, lifestyle habits, environmental factors, medication and supplemental regimens and review of relevant blood or pathology test results.

Taking the extensive information gained from these assessments, a combination of
nutritional medicine, herbal medicine and lifestyle tools and strategies are then used to
formulate a personalised treatment plan specific for an individuals’ health issues.

Naturopathic and nutritional medicine can be effective for:

  • Helping to prevent the onset or progression many health issues, signs, symptoms or
    diseases
  • Supporting the functioning of certain body processes, pathways or functions
  • The acute management of certain health issues, signs or symptoms
  • As an adjunctive support alongside other medicinal treatments.

Naturopathic medicine is generally not suitable as a quick-fix approach where the patient does not make an equal commitment to complying with recommended treatment plans.
